The basic principles of wolf-repellent fence construction

Grafik Wolf
The installed fence must not be neglected: effective and long-term protection is only achieved if the points mentioned to be observed are continuously checked! Support is provided by solutions such as AKO FenceControl.

Grafik Wolf
Weathered and/or brittle material must be replaced: Conductor material loses conductivity, defective insulators conduct unwanted voltage from the fence into the earth.

Grafik Wolf
Post sufficient warning signs: Any part of an electric fence installed along a public road or public way must be marked at frequent intervals by warning signs. These must be securely fastened to the fence posts or firmly clamped to the fence wires. (Excerpt from the safety standard)

Grafik Wolf
Net piles - especially at corners, beginning and ends, must stand upright: brace outwards and if necessary equip with support piles.

Grafik Wolf
Observe applicable local regulations: there are extreme regional differences in the regulations on compensation for losses due to wolf attacks. Contact your municipality or competent authority for information on eligible protection options and minimum requirements in herd protection for loss compensation.

Grafik Wolf
Electric fences around pastures where animals are kept must be permanently electrified! To prevent the wolf from losing respect for electric fences, they should be kept permanently electrified or the fence ladders dismantled, even if there are no animals on the pasture.

Grafik Wolf
Weak points in the fence such as gates, lanes, ditches, depressions, uneven ground must be well protected. When erecting the fence, make sure that the lowest wire follows the ground contour and is taut. To compensate for uneven ground, additional measures may be necessary, such as shortening the distance between posts and / or installing a vertical wire curtain in places.

Use high-impact electric fencers (min. 2 joules - better 5 joules discharge energy)*.
* Please observe regional/country-specific regulations!

Grafik Wolf
At least 4,000 volts must be measured daily at each point of the fence system, and even at least 5,000 volts in dry soils. The condition of the fence system must be checked at least weekly.

Grafik Wolf
Ground the electric fence in a damp, overgrown place if possible. We recommend using at least 3 corrosion-resistant earth rods with a minimum length of 1 m at intervals of approx. 3 m.

Grafik Wolf
Avoid grass growth to the wire rows as far as possible - growth on the fence reduces the required tension, i.e. regularly mow out the fences or nets!

Grafik Wolf
Use conductor material with very good conductivity, i.e. with low resistance (ideally a resistance of less than 1 Ohm/meter).

Grafik Wolf
Conductor material must not be knotted - use Litzclip or appropriate connectors for transitions/repairs.

Grafik Wolf
Rust deteriorates the current flow immensely: therefore use corrosion-resistant connections and components to screw or clamp tightly.

Grafik Wolf
Pull enough rows of wire at the recommended distances (minimum protection is 4 rows: at the bottom max. 20 cm to the ground, then at 40, 60 and 90 cm height. Recommendation: Better also one row at approx. 120 cm. Connect all rows vertically several times.

Grafik Wolf
Special features of the terrain must be taken into account when erecting a wolf-repellent fence. In particular, it is necessary to avoid recesses on slopes or walls.

Grafik Wolf
In general, however, the minimum heights for the animals to be herded must also be observed here. In combination with the wolf-repellent fence, this results in up to 4 additional rows of wire on spacer insulators with a final height of 120 cm on the "wolf side".

Grafik Wolf
Always tension the conductor material well to avoid sagging.

Grafik Wolf
Tip: regularly tie in additional blue/white herd protection tape with a length of approx. 50-100 cm - this increases the visibility of the fences for the wolf.
